This article explains how to request an Environmentally Critical Area Exemption, Shoreline Exemption, or a Street Improvement Exception.

You can request an exemption once you have applied for and received your Preliminary Assessment Report and/or your construction record number has been created. Exemptions must be submitted under construction (CN) record.
You can request a street improvement exception once you have received your construction (CN) or land use (LU) record number(s). Exceptions can be applied for under either the construction or land use record number.
- Go to the Seattle Services Portal
- Click My Records
- Click the Make Changes button
Note: Use the filters to refine your search and narrow your results. If necessary, use the next page or page number tool at the bottom of the page to locate your record.
- Select Exception/Exemption Request from the list of amendment types, then click Continue Application
- Verify that all information is correct, including the address and parcel, then click Continue Application
- Add additional contact info, if needed, then Continue Application
- Update the Detail Information, if necessary.
- Specify the type of exemption you are requesting from the Dropdown menu
- If you are requesting an Environmentally Critical Area Exemption, add details in the ECA Exemption Request Information by clicking Add a Row
- Choose the ECA Exemption Type from the Dropdown menu
- Select the ECA Type from the Dropdown menu
- Add text into the Reason for Request field
- Request status defaults to New and cannot be changed
- Click Submit
- If you are requesting a Shoreline Exemption, complete the following fields:
- Shoreline Exemption Request Information: Indicate whether your project is in or over the water by clicking the Yes or No radio button
- Shoreline Exemption Req Info: Click Add a Row to add information on the type of shoreline exemption you are seeking
- Choose the Shoreline Exemption Type from the Dropdown menu
- Add text to the Reason for Request field
- Request status defaults to New and cannot be changed
- Click Submit
- To request a Street Improvement Exception, click Add a Row
- Choose the Street Improvement Type from the Dropdown menu
- Indicate whether it is a street or alley
- Add text to the Reason for Request field
- Request status defaults to New and cannot be changed
- Click Submit
- Click Continue Application
- Add attachments to support your request by clicking Select
- When the new window opens, click Select
- Select the document from your files and click Open
- Once you see your file name displayed, click Done
- Click Save
- Click the Continue Application
- Review your exemption information; click Edit to make changes
- Click Continue Application
- Review the fees and click Checkout to pay
- Select the items to pay and click Checkout
- Complete the payment information and click Submit Payment
- Once payment is complete, you will be redirected to the confirmation page
- You will now see the exemption request record listed with your other records
