We consider renewals to be amendments to existing records. They are tracked using the initial record number with a numeric suffix. They can be found under related records for the initial application.
Below is a list of all SDCI permits and how to renew them. Several permits use the same process, outlined in How do I Renew an SDCI Construction Permit?

Billboard Permit |
Please contact SDCI at sci_signs@seattle.gov to request a renewal. |
Billboard Registration |
We will send you a notification April 1 of each year with a payment deadline of July 1. You can pay your fee in the Seattle Services Portal. We will inspect the billboard to make sure it still meets all code requirements. |
Blanket Tenant Improvement |
The renewal process is the same as our Construction Permit process. |
Boiler Equipment Certification |
You cannot renew a boiler equipment certification. We inspect these systems annually and send the certificates when we pass your inspection passes and you have paid your fees. Please email sci_boiler@seattle.gov for any questions about an overdue certificate. |
Boiler Operating License |
When your renewal date is approaching, we'll send you a notification and add a fee to your record. Once you pay the fee, we will update our system and mail you your updated certificate. |
Boiler Permit |

Construction |
Your permit can only be renewed within 30 days of the expiration date. See How Do I Renew an SDCI Construction Permit for instructions. Your renewal adds an additional 18 months beyond the initial expiration date. |
Conveyance - Temporary Use |
You cannot renew this type of permit. Once you have approval for the use, you need to obtain an additional permit for every 60 days of temporary use. |
Conveyance Equipment Certification |
You cannot renew this type of permit. We inspect conveyance equipment annually and send certificates when they pass the inspection and you have paid the fee. Please email sci_elevator@seattle.gov if you have questions about an overdue certificate. |
Conveyance Permit |

Demolition |
The renewal process is the same as our Construction Permit process. |
Early Design Guidance (EDG) |
This is part of our Design Review process, not a permit. There is not a renewal process for Early Design Guidance. |
Electrical Online Trade-Construction (OTC) |
To initiate a renewal of this type of permit, submit your request through our Send Us a Question page. |
Electrical Plan Review |
The inspector in the field or the plans examiner can extend the due date as long as work is ongoing. |
Furnace - Single-Family/Duplex |
To initiate a renewal of this type of permit, submit your request through our Send Us a Question page. |
Gas Piping License |
We automatically add the renewal fee to your record. Once you pay the fee, through the Seattle Services Portal the license is renewed. |
Grading |
Same as the Construction Permit process. |
Grading Season Extension |
You must apply for another extension in the Seattle Services Portal. |
Hazardous Tree Removal and Vegetation Restoration Approval |
This is not a permit; it is an “approval” to remove a tree or vegetate on the property There is not an expiration date associated with the approval. |
Exemptions |
Exemptions are an approval and good for 24 months for the same scope of work. |
Mechanical Permit |
For most mechanical permits, the renewal process is the same as our Construction Permit process. For single-family residence furnace mechanical permits, send your request to us using our Q&A service. |
Master Use Permit (MUP) |
You can renew master use permits at any time before the expiration date. You do not need to renew an expired master use permit if you have submitted a complete building application or if the building permit is issued. You can renew the MUP up to a total of five years. You can apply through the Seattle Services Portal. |
Shoreline Permit |
You must renew your shoreline permit before it expires. The Construction Permit does not keep the shoreline permit active. Follow our regular Construction Permit renewal process if the permit has not expired. If your permit has expired, you must contact us so we can help renew your permit. |
Noise Variance |
You cannot renew a noise variance. If you need more time, you must apply for new temporary variance. |
Phased Project |
The renewal process is the same as our Construction Permit process. |
Refrigeration Contractor License |
When the renewal date is approaching, we’ll send you a notification and add a fee to your record. Once you pay your fees through the Seattle Services Portal, we’ll mail you the updated license. |
Refrigeration Equipment Certification |
You cannot renew this type of permit. We inspect the refrigeration equipment annually and send certificates when they pass our inspection and you have paid the fee. |
Refrigeration Journeyman/Operator License |
When the renewal date is approaching, we’ll send you a notification and add a fee to your record. Once you pay your fee through the Seattle Services Portal, we’ll mail you the updated license. |
Refrigeration Permit |

Reroofing |

Rental Registration & Inspection Ordinance (RRIO) Private Inspector |

RRIO Rental Registration |
